External Membership

Non-members of the University may apply to join the Library. Membership is only available to those with a genuine need to use our resources for academic research. It is provided at the discretion of the Director of Library and Learning Services. You can apply by completing the application form, which is presented when you click on "Begin" at the bottom of this page.

You are advised to check what supporting documents you need to submit with your application (detailed beneath the title "Types of External Membership") and read the following before you make your application:

Types of External Membership

Visitor (Free) – Individual members of the public over the age of 18 may gain access on up to three visits in a lifetime to Kimberlin Library for reference use. After this we require that you join the Library as a member.

  • Photographic ID and proof of address (within the last three months) are required to be shown when signing in.

 

External Borrowing (£60 per year) - Allows you to borrow up to four books from our main print collection, with reference access to journals and use of other study facilities. Books are loanable for two weeks and will auto-renew unless required by another borrower. Please therefore ensure that you check your e-mails regularly. Fines will apply for late returns.

  • A passport-style photograph, photographic ID and proof of address (within the last three months) are required to submit your application

 

DMU Alumni / Former DMU Staff (10 years+ service) / Affiliated Staff (Free) - Allows you to borrow up to four books from our main print collection, with reference access to journals and use of other study facilitiesBooks are loanable for two weeks and will auto-renew unless required by another borrower. Please therefore ensure that you check your e-mails regularly. Fines will apply for late returns. Full details of services are detailed on our Alumni guide. Alumni need to also contact the Alumni Office, who will then confirm your status and eligibility with the Library. 

  • A passport-style photograph, photographic ID and proof of address (within the last three months) are required to submit your application. In addition to:
    • Former DMU staff – Letter confirming status and length of service from Human Resources
    • Affiliated Staff - Letter confirming status from relevant Head of Department/Dean of Faculty‚Äč

 

SCONUL Access (Free) – Available for staff and students from UK institutions who participate in the SCONUL Access scheme. Registration must be initially made to your home institution and approved via the SCONUL website prior to online membership application. Depending on your eligibility, you will be entitled to either reference membership or external borrowing membership free of charge.

  • A passport-style photograph, photographic University ID card and proof of address (within the last three months) are required to submit your application. In addition to:
  • Your approval email from SCONUL Access

 

Please note: During our summer vacation period, the SCONUL Access vacation agreement is in operation; you can visit during the permitted times and show your University ID for access, without needing to apply for membership.
