Inter-Library Loans: ILL Request Form

How do I request an item through the ILLs Service?

  1. First of all it is important that you have already checked our extensive DMU Library collections of resources. Use Library Search to search our collections in the first instance. Download the Lean Library extension for your web browser and it will indicate whether we already have a copy of the book or journal article you are looking for. If we already have the book or article in stock, you won't need to fill in the form to request an ILL from another library, so it will save you some time!
  2. Also, please check that you are entitled to request ILLs  from us, that you don't have any outstanding charges or overdue books, and that you have not exceeded the maximum number of  ILL requests you can make. If you are not eligible we will have to cancel your request.
  3. If you require an item for Teaching purposes please contact the ILLs Team for more information about how to place a request. You cannot use the online ILL request form for any items which will be used for teaching purposes - due to Copyright legislation - so we will need to request the item manually for you..
  4. You will need to complete one online ILL request form for each individual book or journal article that you require.

Please remember to:

  1. provide full and accurate information about the item you want, so we can supply the correct item quickly to you.
  2. supply both the title of the article, and the title of the journal that it is published in, when requesting a journal article. Always include details of the date, volume, and issue of that journal.
  3. enter the ISBN/ISSN on the ILL request form.
  4. supply the reference details as it might help us locate the item more quickly for you (e.g. let us know if you saw it on a particular website).

Specific restrictions on borrowing books via the Inter-library Loans Service:

  1. Sometimes a book is loaned to us from another library with the condition that it is consulted only within Kimberlin Library. This is stipulated by the lending library and is not negotiable, so you will need to come into Kimberlin Library to view the book and cannot take it outside the library.
  2. The length of the loan period for a book is fixed by the lending library, and normally it is six weeks but can be as short as two weeks.
  3. Any ILL book may be recalled at any time by another library if someone else requests it, so please collect and make good use of the book as soon as possible in case we have to return it earlier than expected.
  4. We need to promptly return all the ILL books that we borrow on your behalf, in order to maintain good relations with other libraries. We also aim to avoid incurring charges for late returned items, so please return your books on or before the Due Date and always return them with a 'Signed For' service to ensure safe receipt, if you post them..

How do I check on the progress of my ILL request?

Customers will be notified by an email to their DMU email address when items are available for collection or download, as appropriate, or if we are unable to obtain the requested item for you.

You may find it helpful to check 'My Account' on the library catalogue for more information on the progress of your requests.

If you need further information, please contact the ILLs Team.
