How to use the Library Catalogue and Understanding Shelfmarks: About your Library Catalogue

A guide to using the library catalogue and finding books on the shelves using the Dewey Decimal Classification scheme.

What is the Library Catalogue?

The Library Catalogue lists every book, pamphlet, print copy journal, DVD, media and other resource in De Montfort University’s libraries and gives you all the information you need to locate and use those resources for your study. You can search the library catalogue here, or by visiting the Library Home page and clicking Catalogue, located near the top right hand corner of the page.

The catalogue offers a variety of features which help you find and use the resources you need and share information about those resources with other users by creating and saving lists of useful items, downloading item details to Refworks, social tagging, public lists and rating resources.

My Account

Clicking on the My Account tab at the top right of the catalogue search page leads you to a screen where you can:

  • check your loans - renew any that are not reserved
  • check whether you have any outstanding charges
  • check your reservations
  • check the progress of any inter library loan requests you have made
  • view your loan history
  • reset or change your Library PIN

You will need to sign in using either your student/staff number without the P and your 4-digit Library PIN, or your single sign on details.

My Lists

On your search results and item details pages you will see a Save button. This button allows you to save an item to your My Lists section. This is useful if you want to build a reading list or reference list for a particular module or subject.

Clicking Save opens a dialog box asking you to give your list a name. If you are already signed in you will also have the option to add the item to an existing list. Once you have created a name or selected an existing list, click to save it.

Clicking the Save button also gives you the option to export the item reference to a bibliographic management tool such as Refworks.

You can go back to stored lists to edit them at any time by clicking the My lists link at the top right-hand corner of the screen. Lists are private by default, but can be made public for other users to see.

Tip: Sign in before saving items to a list. This will keep the items you save attached to your account. If you leave the catalogue without signing in, any lists you created during your current session will be lost.

Should I Use the Library Catalogue or Library Search?

  • If you are looking for a specific book use the Library Catalogue.
  • If you are looking for all types of available information on a topic use Library Search.
  • If you are looking for a specific, full text journal article use Library Search.
  • To renew books and for other account based activities, log in to My Account on the Library Catalogue.
Tip: Whether you use the Library Catalogue or Library Search, always consider the Refine your Search facets on the left hand side of the search pages. Clicking on one or more of the boxes will limit your results to items matching that facet and help you to find exactly what you are looking for.

What is my Library PIN?

When you begin your study at DMU you will receive an email with your unique four digit Personal Identification Number. You need this to use the self-issue machines and to access your Library account. If you do not receive your PIN or have forgotten it you can reset it by clicking My Account from Library Catalogue page and selecting the 'Reset PIN' option below the sign in boxes. You can also change your PIN to any four digit number you choose when signed into your Library account by clicking on 'My Account' and selecting 'Change PIN'.

Tip: If you have any problem retrieving or using your PIN please visit the First Floor Desk.
